| ABOUT GREELEY |
Greeley began in 1868 as Nathan C. Meeker's dream of a utopian community.
As an agricultural editor for the New York Tribune, Meeker was inspired by the
possibilities he saw for the plains northeast of Denver. Meeker
spearheaded a drive to form a colony based on cooperation, irrigation,
agriculture, temperance, religion and education. His efforts were
supported by his editor, Horace Greeley, who made famous the phrase,
"Go West, young man, go West." Today, many modern day pioneers are
calling Greeley home. Capitalizing on its rich agricultural heritage,
Greeley offers a strong, diverse economy where the mountains meet the plains.
In addition to the many local agricultural enterprises that help feed
the world, Greeley is also home to several high-tech product businesses,
software development companies, and start-up entrepreneurial ventures.
The superior quality of life, a high emphasis on family, the affordable
cost of living, and good proximity to transportation corridors and
Denver International Airport have led Greeley and Weld County to attract
a number of national and international companies including; Kodak,
ConAgra, RR Donnelley, and Meadow Gold Dairy. Greeley is pleased to
be home for the regional headquarters for State Farm Insurance and
the offices of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners.
Greeley is the largest city in Weld County and supports a growing
population of over 75,000. The outstanding quality of life Greeley
has to offer has been recognized by Money Magazine and Greeley has
received the All-American City award. Greeley is the education hub
for the region and is home to the University of Northern Colorado
with a student population of over 11,000. Additionally, Aims Community
College, with its main campus in Greeley, serves over 16,000 students
annually. Greeley is home to the North Colorado Medical Center (NCMC),
a 326-bed regional medical center dedicated to total patient care.
The Union Colony Civic Center, an award winning, state-of-the-art
visual and performing arts facility, is located in downtown Greeley.
It houses the 1,665-seat Monfort Concert Hall, the 220-seat Hensel
Phelps Theatre, and the Tointon Gallery for the Visual Arts. Greeley's
downtown area continues to improve as an increasing number of older
buildings are reclaimed and returned to their previous vitality. Acknowledging
that the vitality of the Greeley central business district is an important
element in improving the regional economic and business climate, area
voters approved a Downtown Development Authority in September of 1998.
